ARCHITECTURAL BUILT-INS

Built for the room, not added to it.

Architectural built-ins should feel like part of the original intent of the space.

Pittsburgh has the second-oldest housing stock in the country. A 1925 Foursquare or a 1955 Cape has plaster over lath, walls out of square by an inch over eight feet, radiators under the windows, and original oak or gumwood trim with a profile you cannot buy.

A modular system engineered for square drywall does not clear that bar. It gets scribe-stripped and caulked, and it reads as bolted on instead of original. We scribe to the wall that is actually there and match the trim that is already in the house — including grinding a knife off your existing profile when no catalog carries it.

The finished test

Two questions, in this order. Does a guest stop in front of it? And when they ask who built it, are they surprised it was not original? A catalog product fails the first. A handyman build fails the second.

Cabinet with two bypass sliding doors and flush recessed pulls under a granite top

FROM A RECENT BUILD

When a swinging door has nowhere to go.

This cabinet sits where a standard door would have hit the wall on every open. The doors bypass each other inside the case instead, and the pulls are let into the face so nothing protrudes into the walkway.

That is the whole job of a built-in: solve the thing about the room that a catalog box cannot.
